YouTube is the latest video-sharing platform to impose stricter rules on gambling content, specifically targeting sites that lack proper local licensing and regulation.
YouTube Revises Gambling Content Rules, Tightens Policies
Following Twitch’s 2022 gambling ban, YouTube has now prohibited promotions for “unapproved gambling websites,” which lack jurisdictional licenses. The new rule applies to all promotional content, including links, logos, images, text, or verbal mentions.
In a statement, YouTube explained:
“We understand this update may affect creators focusing on gambling content, but we believe these changes are necessary to protect our community, especially younger viewers.”
Determining an “unapproved gambling site” is complex, as YouTube operates globally. A website licensed in one region may still be restricted in another. To clarify, YouTube stated that any site failing to meet local laws or lacking approval from the platform or Google would be classified as “unapproved.”
Speaking to CNN on Tuesday, YouTube spokesperson Boot Bullwinkle confirmed that the company had reinforced its policies to prevent exposure to this content.
Additional policy updates include age restrictions for gambling content. Users under 18 or those who haven’t verified their age will be unable to access such videos. YouTube also scrutinizes misleading gambling promotions, particularly those promising “guaranteed winnings.” Instead, the platform emphasizes gambling as a game of chance, where winnings occur randomly.
YouTube Faces Regulatory Pressure in Multiple Jurisdictions
Certain jurisdictions have actively pushed for stricter consumer protection measures on video-sharing platforms.
Italy’s regulators have urged YouTube and Twitch to prevent illegal gambling promotions, targeting unlicensed operators attempting to reach Italian players.
YouTube’s new policies will take effect on March 19, with immediate enforcement upon implementation.
