According to reports from the Australian Financial Review, Victoria’s casino regulator is conducting an investigation into Crown Resorts following internal inquiries initiated by the gaming company’s board. The focus of Crown’s internal investigation is allegedly centered on Carruthers and his purported involvement in reinstating patrons removed from the Melbourne precinct on multiple occasions.
Victoria’s Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) has confirmed its active involvement in the investigation, with a spokesperson stating, “The VGCCC is aware of an internal matter involving Crown and are actively investigating. We are not in a position to provide further comment at this time.”
While the allegations against Carruthers are under scrutiny, sources close to the VGCCC probe suggest that the regulator is particularly examining claims related to permitting a minor onto the gaming floor.
In response to the ongoing inquiries, a Crown spokesman disclosed the engagement of external counsel to conduct an independent review. The investigation aims to assess whether limitations should be imposed on management’s authority concerning customer safety.
Crown Resorts has been operating under strict conditions set by the VGCCC, which granted it a special license after a royal commission found the group unsuitable to hold a casino license. The decision regarding Crown’s capability to independently operate the casino is expected in early 2024.
