Australia’s national self-exclusion program, BetStop, has now registered 28,000 individuals, marking a significant milestone. Launched in August last year, the program aims to shift attitudes towards responsible gambling.
Australia Celebrates BetStop’s First Year of Success
BetStop functions as a central exclusion registry across Australia, enabling players to self-exclude from gambling nationwide. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) recently highlighted the program’s progress, noting that nearly half of the registrants are under 30 years old, with 80% aged 40 or younger. Additionally, 40% of those registered have opted for lifelong exclusion, indicating a strong demand for the service.
Only 20% of registrants chose the minimum self-exclusion period of three months, while 14% have extended their exclusion to aid their recovery, according to ACMA.
ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin expressed satisfaction with BetStop’s first year, emphasizing its positive impact on the country. O’Loughlin highlighted the risks of gambling and praised young Australians for taking proactive steps to manage their gambling habits.
“Young Australians are making responsible decisions about gambling, recognizing the risks early,” she stated, noting that many are also nominating supporters to help them stick to their self-exclusion decisions.
Australia is also considering a ban on sports gambling advertisements, a move supported by experts and policymakers. Meanwhile, ACMA continues to block illegal gambling websites, with around 1,000 sites already restricted.
